Insulin

Diabetes can progress to the point of requiring daily insulin shots just to keep sugar levels manageable. When my mom found out she had to take insulin she understood how serious the situation was, because she is very afraid of needles. Luckily, however, there have been advances in medicine and we found out that the injection needles are now made laser fine so they don’t hurt as much. My mom has been able to give herself shots when necessary, and she simply changes needles right away when it begins to get dull and hurt.
My own feelings about insulin is that I would rather not rely on it. I believe it was necessary to start the shots when things got really bad, but I wanted to get away from them as soon as possible. Taking the shots was helpful for giving the pancreas a rest from working too hard. However, I didn’t want to have too much insulin circulating in the body which could further increase cell resistance to insulin. With all of our efforts to control eating, blood sugar, and weight loss my mom has now been able to get off the shots and still have decent numbers. We are not completely where we need to be but we are getting there!
